Women’s Soccer Knocks Out No. 2 Valdosta State, Advances to Semifinals

Carrollton, Ga.- West Alabama women's soccer team knocked out No. 2 Valdosta State from Group B, 3-2, Sunday afternoon in quarterfinals of the GSC Spring Championship Series, advancing the Tigers to semifinals. 

"Anele Komani was fantastic today and showed great leadership," UWA head coach Graeme Orr said. "The girls stuck to the game plan and kept good composure until the end. Now we have a week to get everyone healthy adn prepare ourselves for the next one."

VSU out shot the Tigers, 12-8, and won the shots on goal battle, 8-4.

West Alabama put up a late goal in the first half by Madison Barbara at the 32:47 mark, making that her first goal of the season.

The match went into halftime with the Tigers ahead of Valdosta State, 1-0.

The Blazers fought back in the second half and scored at the 57:01 mark by Kyleigh Reedy bringing the score to a tie, 1-1.

Five minutes later, Rachael Howard added another goal for VSU pushing the Blazers ahead of the Tigers, 2-1.

West Alabama continued to battle allowing Anele Komani to score her fourth goal of the season off an assist from Paige Laidler at the 66:18 mark.

UWA rounded out their scoring at the 79:15 mark by Megan Ongteco off an assist from Anele Komani to set the final at 3-2.

Tabitha Weldon recorded six saves in the victory over the Blazers.

Two yellow cards and 18 fouls were called in the matchup as both teams were called for nine.

West Alabama returns to action Saturday or Sunday against Group A No. 1 Mississippi College. More information will be announced when it is available.
