Chargers Earn Series Sweep with 7-2 Win over Tigers

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Hitting was not an issue for both teams as the University of West Alabama softball team and the Alabama Huntsville Chargers combined for 19 hits, but the visitors turned more hits into runs as UAH grabbed a 7-2 win over the Tigers in Gulf South Conference action Saturday afternoon at the UWA Softball Complex.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 11-13 on the season and 7-11 in the GSC while UAH improved to 17-7 overall and 12-6 in league play.

"It was a really bad weekend on defense for us," said Head coach Carie Dever Boaz. "We didn't have clutch hitting and we need to eliminate our walks. We are a much better team than what we put on the field. Time to regroup and get back to basics."

Alabama Huntsville finished the offense filled contest with 12 hits while the Tigers produced seven on the day. On the flip side, West Alabama allowed five walks while UAH only surrendered two free passes.

The Chargers jumped ahead early with a run in the first thanks to single down the left by Kiara Akles that allowed Ashley Cornell to come around to score. In the second, Cornell extended the lead with a double as Shelby Booker and Gracie Green scored to put UAH up 3-0.

West Alabama responded with a homer in the bottom of the second from Mary Grace Sheffield, the first of her career, to give the Tigers their first hit and run of the day. UWA loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning but were unable to scratch across another run and trailed 3-1 after two innings.

Alabama Huntsville tacked another in the third run when Kaylee Vaught scored on a single by Reagan Malone to up 4-1. Then in the fourth, Alaina Hampton smashed a single up the middle as Mackenzie McNutt and Cornell crossed home to put UAH up 6-1.

Kacy Noland doubled in the bottom of the fourth to centerfield and the hit was deep enough to allow Kendall Johnson to score from second and cut the lead to 6-2.

In a pinch-hit appearance, Laura Harbin singled to center as Heather Thompson scored and pushed the Charger lead to 7-2 which stood as the final margin for victory.

Layton Murphy (7-4) earned the win in relief as she pitched four innings, struck out two batters and allowed four hits and an earned run. Kiara Akles started the contest and pitched two innings with a strikeout, three hits given up and an earned run. Grace O'Berry worked the final frame and did not allow the Tigers to reach base.

Kacy Noland (5-5) went 1.2 innings in her start with five hits and three earned runs allowed. Hannah Mynard pitched two innings in relief and gave up four hits and three earned runs. Breanna Fortenberry worked the final 3.1 innings, struck out a batter and allowed three hits and an earned run.

West Alabama returns to action on March 30 in a single game against Mississippi College. The nonconference contest is set to start at 6 p.m. at the UWA Softball Complex in Livingston, Alabama. Game links will be available on uwaathletics.com.
