UWA Falls in Semifinals of the GSC SCS

JACKSON, Tenn. - West Alabama men's soccer spring season comes to an end as the Tigers fell on the road to Union 2-1 in the matchup Sunday evening in Jackson.

"It obviously really stings right now," UWA head coach Ross Nelson said. "To come so close to reaching a final and to just fall short is always going to hurt, but it is these things that make you stronger. Any time we have face adversity this season, we came back even stronger and that is exactly what we will do from this. You win or you learn."

Stan De Vries found the back of the net for the Bulldogs and started the scoring in the second half of the match at the 56:43 mark. Union added another goal at the 65:41 mark, giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead over UWA.

One minute later, the Tigers scored off a penalty kick by Vince Stans and cut the Bulldogs lead to 2-1. This was his fourth goal of the season.

Stans led UWA with four shots, one on target and a goal.

The Bulldogs took 11 shots with five being on goal while the Tigers took 13 shots with four being on goal.

Jules Dechert recorded three saves in the match.

Two yellow cards and 20 fouls were called in the matchup as Union was called for eight fouls and the Tigers called for 12.

"I am so proud of every single one of my players," Nelson said. "There are so many positives for us to take from this season. The only way is up from here. We are only going to improve. We will have much more depth in the fall with some quality new additions that are only going to make us stronger. We will be back and better than ever before. Bring on the fall!"
