Late Goal Leads Mississippi College to a 2-1 Win Over UWA

Clinton, Miss. - A late goal from Mississippi College led the Lady Choctaws to defeat West Alabama women's soccer team 2-1 Friday night at Arrow Field on the campus of Clinton High School.

West Alabama fell to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in GSC play. The Choctaws improved to 4-0 and 4-0.

"We started off well and deserved to take the lead; however, in the second half we didn't show enough quality," UWA head coach Graeme Orr said.

Mississippi College out shot UWA, 9-5, and tied the shots on goal battle, 2-2.

The Tigers took the early lead when Megan Ongteco found the back of the net off an assist from Anele Komani within the first six minutes of the game.

The match went into halftime with the score knotted at 1-1.

The Lady Choctaws scored the game-winner in the 71st minute as Dani Avelar took an assist from MaryElla White and slid it into the lower left corner.

Two yellow cards and 17 fouls were called in the matchup as MC were called for 10 fouls and UWA called for seven.

West Alabama returns to action Monday against Delta State. The match is set for a 2:30 p.m. start.
