Cleveland, Miss. - West Alabama softball rallied to collect a 14-2 victory over Delta State in the first game then dropped game two of the doubleheader, 6-5, at University Field in Cleveland, Mississippi.
The Tigers moved to 7-7 overall and 3-5 in GSC play. The Statesmen are 9-7 and 4-4.
"Kacy Noland came out and threw a gem of a game," UWA head coach Carie Dever-Boaz said. "We really were rolling in all aspects of the game. I hate that we fell short in game two. Defense was spot on, rolling three double plays. We need to come out swinging tomorrow."
Game 1
Kacy Noland (2-1) pitched a complete game with five hits and one earned run in West Alabama's 14-2 win over Delta State.
The Tigers got on the scoreboard with one run in the third when Chrissy Tubbs doubled, advanced to third off Kendall Johnson's sacrifice bunt and scored off Abby McKee's ground out. LP Trammell added a run in the fourth.
Cassie Matlock hit a two-run homer driving in Morgan Windham in the fifth to gain a four point lead over the Statesmen. Kelsie Gilliam, Presley Witt, and Lexy House all added a run putting the score at 7-0.
Matlock, Trammell, Tubbs, and Peyton Coots led the offense in the seventh and all sent runners across the plate.
Matlock finished the day with two hits and four RBIs. Trammell and Tubbs both finished with two hits and collected three RBIs. Coots had three hits and earned three RBIs.
The Tigers closed out the game with six runs in the seventh to reach the 14-2 final margin.
Game 2
The Tigers jumped to an early lead scoring two runs in the third by Kendall Johnson and Matlock.
DSU exploded five runs in the fifth to take the lead over UWA, 6-3.
Johnson and Tubbs added two more runs in the fifth but not enough to push ahead of the Statesmen putting the final score at 6-5.
Caleigh Wallace (0-1) absorbed the loss and lasted three and a third innings with six hits and four earned runs while striking out one.
DSU Lacey Coats (5-2) pitched a complete game allowing seven hits and five runs, striking out three.
The Tigers are scheduled to finish the three-game series with a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
