Box Score LIVINGSTON, Ala. — The University of West Alabama softball team was aggressive at the plate early and the aggression paid off as UWA collected a 10-2 victory in six innings over the Shorter Lady Hawks Friday night in Gulf South Conference action at the UWA Softball Complex.
"It was a great night on all sides of the ball tonight," UWA head coach Carie Dever-Boaz said. "It is fun when we are firing on all cylinders. Now we need to do that consistently."
The win helped even the Tigers overall record at 8-8 and improved the GSC record to 4-6 while Shorter fell to 4-11 on the season and 0-7 in league play.
LP Trammell doubled to left center for the first RBI of the day to allow lead off hitter Chrissy Tubbs to score in the bottom in the first. Peyton Coots followed with her second home run of the year down the left field line which brought in Trammell to put the Tigers up 3-0 after an inning of play.
West Alabama came back with the bats in the second starting with a single by Tubbs which scored Grace Self followed by another RBI for Coots, this time off a single as Cassie Matlock crossed home. Kylie Martin inserted herself into the action with a single down right field line that allowed Trammell to score. Martin then used a nifty bit of base running to steal second and serve as enough distraction to let Coots score from third as UWA took a 7-0 lead at the end of three innings.
Shorter did not go quietly as the Lady Hawks loaded the bases in the fifth, Sydney Poston smacked a single to centerfield and Kiera Dudley scored to put SU on the board trailing 7-1.
The Tigers came close to ending this one after five after Kendall Johnson's sacrifice fly to center allowed Morgan Windham to tag and score to put the team up 8-1. West Alabama worked the bases loaded, but were unable to scratch that final run across in the fifth.
The Lady Hawks scored in the sixth as Dudley singled down the right field line which allowed Kaylee George to score and tighten the score to 8-2.
Caleigh Wallace responded in the bottom of the inning with a solo homer, her first of the year, to center to put the Tigers up seven. UWA then worked the bases loaded to end the game as Tubbs was hit by pitch for a rough RBI, House scored and the Tigers won 10-2 in six innings.
Kacy Noland (3-2) pitched 5.2 innings, stuck out four batters and allowed three hits and one earned run. Breanna Fortenberry recorded an out in the fifth, allowed three hits and an earned run.
Coots finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, a double and a home run to lead the offensive effort. Both Coots and Trammell scored twice in the victory.
Jackie O'Reilly (0-2) worked 1.2 innings and allowed five hits, three walks and seven earned runs. Julie Sanderlin went four innings and gave up five hits, a walk and three earned runs.
