Match Recap: #5 Women's Tennis |

UWA Women Down DI Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – After winning the doubles point, West Alabama won five singles matches in straight sets on the way to a 6-1 women's college tennis victory over NCAA Division I Alabama State Sunday at the Olean Back Underwood Tennis Center.

Sarah Maseri and Heden Ly took No. 1 doubles, 7-6, while Haina Franco and Thea Yang won, 6-2, at No. 2 to claim the doubles point.

While winning in straight sets, Franco, Manseri, Ly and Daryna Hukasian all won tiebreaks to take singles matches at No. 1, 2, 3 and 5, respectively. Thea Yang won at No. 4 without going to a tiebreak. The only singles match that Alabama State managed to win was at No. 6.

"ASU came out strong and put a lot of pressure on us from the start," UWA assistant coach Katie Burrall said. "We were able win two doubles courts and keep the momentum and pressure on them."

With head coach Jeff Beaman on a different road trip with the Tiger men's team, Burrall coached the Tiger women at Alabama State.

"I am very proud of the women and Katie. The chance for this match came up last minute and we need to play," Beaman said. "The women have done a great job with organization and focus at practice, and they came up big under Katie's guidance today."

West Alabama returns to Gulf South Conference play by hosting Mississippi College Wednesday at the Vaughan Tennis Complex. Alabama State returns to action Saturday against Southern in the SWAC Pod Two in Montgomery.
