UWA Clinches GSC Women’s Regular Season Title

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Sixth-ranked West Alabama clinched its second Gulf South Conference regular season women's tennis championship in three years with a 7-0 victory over Delta State Tuesday at the Vaughan Tennis Complex.
 
The Tigers are 13-2 overall and a perfect 9-0 in league play with one match left in the regular season. The win was the fifth 7-0 skunking dealt to a Tiger opponent this season and extended the UWA winning streak to eight matches. Delta State is 4-8 and 3-6.
 
With just one regular season conference match to play, the worst UWA can do is tie with West Florida, but the Tigers hold the tiebreaker over the Lady Argonauts after defeating UWF, 4-2, on April 5 in Pensacola.
 
"The women continue their great year," UWA head coach Jeff Beaman said. "After some early Senior Day jitters at No. 2 and 3 doubles we came out strong and cruised in singles.
 
"This has been a special year for the women, but I reminded them it has just started with conference regular season," Beaman said. "It is time to focus on the GSC tournament and getting the best possible seeding for regionals."
 
West Alabama took the doubles point after the Tigers and Lady Statesmen split the first two matches to go final. Heden Ly and Thea Yang notched a 7-5 win at No. 2 to claim the point. It was basically no contest in singles as the Tigers won every match in straight sets.
 
West Alabama concludes the regular season Thursday at Christian Brothers. First serve is set for 12:30 p.m. Delta State is host to Auburn-Montgomery on Friday.
