UWA Women Cruise Past Montevallo in First Round

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – West Alabama extended its winning streak to 10 matches by cruising past Montevallo, 4-0, in the first round of the Gulf South Conference Women's Tennis Championships Monday at Lagoon Park.
 
Ranked fifth in the nation and the top seed in the GSC tourney, West Alabama improved to 15-2 with the victory. Eighth-seeded Montevallo ended its season with a 5-12 record.
 
West Alabama jumped to a 1-0 lead with doubles victories on Court 2 and 3. Heden Ly and Thea Yang defeated Cyba Ozzor and Eva Dirr, 6-0, at No. 2 doubles. Hardija Vidnere and Daryna Hukasian disposed of Emily Hafner and Courtney Piltaver, 6-0, at No. 3, leaving no reason to finish on Court 1.
 
The Tigers put the match away with wins at No. 3, 4 and 5 singles. Ly defeated Dirr 6-0, 6-4 at No. 3, while Hukasian beat Dorotea Hanzek 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 and Yang beat Victoria Rauscher 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 singles. 
 
With the match in hand for West Alabama, singles matches at No. 1, 2 and 6 singles were unfinished.
 
West Alabama advances to the semi-finals on Friday against fourth-seeded Auburn-Montgomery, who defeated No. 5 Valdosta State, 4-2, on Thursday. First serve is set for 10 a.m. at Lagoon Park.
