No. 10 Tigers Defeat No. 6 UWF

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Alabama women's tennis team defeated West Florida for just the second time in school history Tuesday at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex, taking control of the top spot in the Gulf South Conference standings with a 4-3 win over the Lady Argonauts.
 
The 10th-ranked Tigers improved to 10-2 overall and 6-0 in the GSC with their fifth straight win. West Florida, ranked 6th in the nation, is 10-4 and 6-1.
 
After dropping all three doubles matches, West Alabama roared back to win four of six singles matches to take the match. The Tigers are 31-5 in No. 4 through No. 6 singles spots this season.
 
Thea Yang came from down 3-2 to Samantha Echevarria to win the third set of No. 5 singles 6-3 and clinch the match for West Alabama. Yang won the first set, 6-4, and Echevarria took the second, 6-3, before Yang rallied for the match winner.
 
"This was a really big win for the ladies and I can't say enough about their effort and perseverance after getting down early," UWA head coach Jeff Beaman said. "I am really proud of Thea and the way she battled against a quality opponent for the match winner."
 
Heden Ly was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Sara Yigin at No. 3 singles, while Daryna Hukasian defeated Karolina Silwanowicz 7-5, 6-7, 6-0 at No. 4. Valeria Arevalo was a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) winner over Raissa Wagner on the No. 6 singles court.

West Alabama remains in GSC play by hosting Shorter Wednesday at the Vaughan Tennis Complex. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
