Tigers Split GSC Doubleheader with AUM

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – With a berth to the 2021 Gulf South Conference Baseball Championship Tournament on the line West Alabama and Auburn-Montgomery split a Saturday doubleheader at Tartt Field, with the outcome landing the Warhawks a ticket to continue and the Tigers an end to the season.
 
West Alabama won Saturday's first game, 7-0, to secure a win in the three-game series, but a 14-8 Warhawk's win in the nightcap ended West Alabama's season at 13-21 overall and 11-17 in league play. AUM is 18-21 and 16-20.
 
Connor Brooks (3-5) pitched eight innings of shutout baseball in the opener to earn the win. Landen Davis retired the side in order in the ninth but did not qualify for a save with the Tigers owing a seven-run advantage. AUM starter Micah Henderson (6-4) took the loss in the opener, allowing six hits and two runs in 5.2 innings.
 
Warhawks reliever Jax Morris picked up the win in the second game, allowing a hit and two runs in 2.2 innings. Sam Steigert worked the final three innings for his third save. West Alabama reliever Mason Hollander (3-2) took the loss, giving up three hits and five runs in a third of an inning.
 
West Alabama combined to collected 25 hits in the two games, with senior first baseman Taylor Clemmons collecting six of those in his final day in a Tiger uniform. Jake Nemith, Gavin Rogers, Josh Bower, Jacobey Hawthorne and Houston Kitterman each had three hits in the twinbill.
 
Nemith hit his sixth home run of the year, a solo shot in the seventh inning of game one. All three of Bower's hits were doubles.
 
After being limited to just five this in the first game, AUM collected 14 in the nightcap, including four doubles and Grayson Blackwell's fourth homer of the year. Sage Smelley had four hits in the two games, followed by Jackson Ceman, Casey Henderson and Joseph Hartsfield with three apiece.
 
AUM will continue its season this as the No. 8 seed in the GSC Tournament beginning Friday in Oxford, Alabama.
