Volleyball Picks Up Two Sets at the PSC/GSC Crossover

­­­­MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The West Alabama volleyball team will enter conference play with a record of 0-6 after competing in the 2021 PSC/GSC Crossover this weekend. In the two-day tournament, the Tigers faced Augusta University, USC-Aikens, and Georgia College but could not pick up their first win of the season.

UWA vs. Augusta (0-3)

West Alabama dropped the first game of the match to Augusta University on Friday morning with a 3-0 loss (25-12, 25-17, 25-10) at Centennial Center located on the campus of Georgia College.

Sophomores Isabela Sarti and Madison Fisher tallied five kills each. Sophomore setter Desiree Blount picked up nine assists and two service aces. Defensive specialist MacKenzie Wells had a team-high 12 digs while adding four assists. Junior outside hitter Nathalia Medieros was second on the team with four digs, while freshman Maddie Van Dyke was responsible for five assists.

As the team, the Tigers struggled to land attacks and only saw a .041 attack percentage. The defensively saw 30 digs while tallying 22.0 points offensively.

Augusta saw 42 kills on 85 total attacks with 11 errors for a .365 attack percentage. The Jaguars had 37 assists, 12 service aces, and 51 digs.

UWA vs. USC-Aikens (1-3)
The Tigers picked up their first tournament set in a 3-1 (25-13, 23-25, 25-15, 25-22) loss against USC-Aikens on Saturday, Sept. 18. UWA improved offensively and defensively to be more competitive in its second outing of the weekend.

Leading the West Alabama offense, Medeiros picked up nine kills on 24 total attacks with two digs. Beatriz Giordon came in second to tally six kills with one service ace and three digs. On the defensive side of the ball, Holoisa Noiespodzinski tied with Wells to lead the team in digs with 13 each, while Blount stepped up in the setter position to record 19 assists, four digs, and two service aces.

As a team, the Tigers saw a .143 attack percentage with 36 kills on 126 total attacks. On defense, UWA racked up 48 digs and saw two block assists.

USC-Aikens fared better with a .255 attack percentage with 62 kills on 141 total attacks. The Pacers also had 67 digs, four block assists, 10 service aces, and 74.0 points.

UWA vs. Georgia College (1-3)

West Alabama took on host Georgia College for its last matchup of the tournament Saturday afternoon. The Tigers picked up another set against the Bobcats for a final score of 3-1 (25-17, 26-28, 25-17, 25-15).

UWA fought hard against GC and manage to force extra points in the second sets of the competition. Unfortunately, West Alabama was unable to build on the momentum and ultimate lost the match.
Medeiros again led the offense with a season high of 14 kills. Amelia Johnigan and Giordon assisted in the effort, adding 11 and eight kills respectively. Blount also had a big match with a season high

of 28 assists and Van Dyke added 14.

Blount also led the Tiger defense to tie with Wells with 12 digs each. Holoisa Niespodzinski added 10 of her own.

UWA saw a .121 attack percentage with 51 kills on 165 total attacks. The team also recorded 50 assists, one block solo, eight block assists, 69 digs, and 59.0 points.
Georgia College had a .276 attack percentage with 57 kills on 152 total attacks. It had 56 assists, one block solo, 21 block assists, 59 digs, and 74.5 points.

The Tiger will have their first home game on Tuesday, Sept. 21 when they host GSC-rival Mississippi College. The first serve is set for 6 p.m.
