MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Justin Allison had 17 points and eight rebounds, and Kortrijk Miles had 17 points and 10 rebounds as West Alabama routed Auburn Montgomery 72-64 on Wednesday night in overtime.
"I've heard it from Coach Sharp and several other coaches," began head coach Nick Woodruff. "The days you love and will never forget are the day you get married, the day your kids are born, and the day you get a road conference victory."
The Tigers (13-3, 5-3 Gulf South Conference) won their 10th straight in the series and improved to 11-4 against Auburn Montgomery with its first road victory since defeating West Georgia in December.
All but one Tiger who played against the Warhawks added to the UWA scoring tally. Robert Davis led for most of the game to put up 16 points. Shardarrion Allen had 8, and Te Smith had 6. CJ Melton replaced Miles in the starting lineup for 6 points, and Calvin Finch added 2.
As a team, West Alabama 22-for-58 (37.9%) from the floor, including 6-of-17 (35.3%) in three-point range. UWA hit 73.3 % of its free throws at the line, landing 22 on 30 attempts.
West Alabama opened the matchup with a 12-4 run and remained in the lead for most of the competition. The Tigers saw their largest lead of 20-8 with 10:58 left in the first half and allowed AUM to tie the game at 62 to force the overtime.
"We probably won that game with our first-half defense," Woodruff continued. "There are some things down the stretch that we will have to clean up but overall, what a great win for our team and our program."
AUM (6-10, 3-4) ended a three-game winning streak with the loss. After defeating Lee at home, the Warhawks had back-to-back victories at Christian Brothers and Union University.
AUM's leading scorer Isaiah Hart led the team with a game-high 23 points while reigning GSC Player of the Week, James Graham, led the team in rebounding with nine boards.
The Warhawks went 25-for-68 (36.8%) from the field, hitting only one shot beyond the arc on 16 tries. AUM made 13 of 19 (68.4%) shots at the line.
West Alabama will bring the game back home on Saturday, Jan. 15, to host Christian Brothers University. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. inside Pruitt Hall Gymnasium.
