Cerra and Jarrett Lead Argos to Win Over UWA

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Griffin Cerra connected on five field goals and Peewee Jarrett ran for 114 yards to lead No. 9 West Florida to a 36-24 Gulf South Conference football victory over at Pen Air Field on the University of West Florida campus.

The victory was the fifth consecutive for West Florida, improving the Argonauts to 7-1 overall, 5-1 in GSC play. West Alabama is 4-5 and 2-4 after dropping its third straight.

"In moments of hard times you have to keep moving forward," UWA head coach Brett Gilliland said. "We have to circle the wagons and we can decide to have two special weeks left in the season for these seniors or we can repeat this for the next two weeks.

"It's all about attitude and effort and we have each other to play for," Gilliland said. "We had plenty of chances to get back in this game, but we had some breakdowns that cost us."

Jarrett opened the scoring for West Florida with a 3-yard touchdown run to cap a 12-play, 70-yard scoring drive on the game's first possession. Griffin Cerra's point after kick gave the Argonauts a 7-0 lead with 7:42 left in the first period.

UWA went three-and-out on its next possession and punted again to Durden, who returned a 32-yard boot 21 yards to the Tiger 21-yard-line, breaking tackles again along the way. After going three-and-out again, Cerra converted from 45 yards to give the Argonauts a 13-10 advantage at the 6:56 mark of the second period.
