LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Despite generating four shots on goal and trailing by just a goal at the half, the West Alabama men's soccer team wasn't able to comeback against Mississippi College as the sixth-seed Choctaws defeated the third-seed Tigers, 3-0, in the quarterfinals of the Gulf South Conference Championships Sunday at Tiger Stadium.
It was a tightly contested first half with each team coming away with six shots. UWA (6-5-5, 6-1-4 GSC) posted the first shot in the seventh minute when Judd Osten sent an attempt wide. Mississippi College (11-3-2, 7-2-2 GSC) answered with their first attempt in the eighth minute that was blocked.
Harry Colville collected the first shot on goal in the 10th minute that was saved by Cole Turner. Shane Pettit, a First Team All-GSC selection, then did his best to get the Tigers on the board. He attempted back-to-back tries in the 13th and then 14th minute, with the first try being saved. His second attempt went wide.
MC then generated a rush in the 15th minute to break through. Guilherme Santos' shot was saved by Harry Deveney, but on the rebound, Felix Ewald was there to record the first goal of the game.
A defensive battle would break out over the next 10-plus minutes before the next shot attempt was taken near the 30th minute. Both were by the Choctaws with a chance being blocked and then the second sailing wide.
MC nearly moved ahead two goals when they hit the crossbar in the 33rd minute. Right after that, Colville was back at it again for the Tigers with his shot in the 35th minute being saved.
Pettit had the last strong chance of the first half with his shot in the 38th minute being saved to leave MC with the 1-0 halftime lead.
Physicality opened the second half with four fouls whistled, two on each team, over the first five-plus minutes.
UWA had a couple of chances off corner kicks by Pettit, but weren't able to generate a shot.
In the 56th minute, MC double their lead when Jakob Gaarde collected a goal for the 2-0 advantage.
Following a few yellow cards and a couple of fouls, Killian Griffin had a chance in the 66th minute on a header that went high.
The Choctaws applied the pressure over the next few minutes with a shot going wide in the 70th minute and then one on target in the 75th minute by Santos for his second of the game to push the lead to 3-0.
UWA wasn't able to tally another shot the remainder of the game with MC claiming the 3-0 victory.
The teams combined for 20 shots with MC holding the 13-7 advantage. The Choctaws also held the 6-4 edge in shots on goal. UWA held the slight 3-2 edge in corner kicks, while there were 26 combined fouls, 14 called on MC.
Pettit paced the Tigers with three shots, two on goal. Colville took two shots with both on goal. Deveney made three saves in goal.
Santos led MC with five shots, three on goal and added a goal scored. Soane Folituu tallied four shots, with one on target. Gaarde and Ewald were accurate on the night as they both took just one shot and both ended up in goals. Turner made four saves in goal for the shutout.
Although the season ends for UWA, it was a successful year. The Tigers went undefeated through the first nine games of the conference schedule and went 6-1-4 over the 11-game slate. A trio of players were named First Team All-GSC and the Tigers were one of the top defensive teams in the country in terms of goals allowed and goals per game.
