Statesmen Outduel Tigers in UWA Season Finale

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State completed an unusual college football two-game regular season sweep, defeating West Alabama for the second time in a month,  17-7, Saturday at Parker Field at McCool Stadium. DSU won the first meeting, 20-7, on Oct. 15, also at Parker Field.
 
THE RECORDS
West Alabama ends its season with a 5-6 record. Delta State heads into the postseason at 10-1. This game did not count in the GSC standings.
 
HOW THEY SCORED
Delta State opened the scoring with a 24-yard catch and run by Kelvin Smith from Patrick Shegog with 11:58 left in the second quarter. Nick Herber's PAT was good to cap a seven-play, 83-yard drive that consumed 2:09.
 
Herber's 23-yard field goal with 10:41 left in the third quarter extended the Delta State lead to 10-0.
 
Smith scored for the second time, this time on a 3-yard rush with 5:23 left in the third quarter to extend the Statesmen lead to 17-0. Smith's TD run and Herber's PAT capped an 11-play, 62-yard drive that took 4:00.
 
Dalton Bailey recorded his first career touchdown, getting West Alabama on the board with 1:34 left in the third quarter on a 7-yard scoring pass from Melton. Gabe Dunkle's extra point was good to cut the DSU lead to 17-7 and end an 11-play, 75 yard scoring drive.
 
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
West Alabama collected 338 total yards while limiting the Statesmen to 254.
 
Delta State came into the game averaging 500.3 total yards and 44 points, but the league-leading Tiger defense limited the Statesmen to 246 yards  and 27 points below their season averages.
 
UWA linebacker Michael Anderson closed out his Tiger career with a big day, collecting 11 total tackles, nine solo.
 
Trevin Stanford had six stops, including 1.5 tackles for loss. TJ Newell chipped in five tackles for UWA.
 
Christian Gomez had 11 tackles for the Fighting Okra, followed by 10 from Marlon Windham. Gomez also recovered two fumbles and Calvin Lockett another.
 
Melton finished his passing day with 26 completions in 43 attempts for 282 yards, a score and an interception. Shegog was 16-of-25 for 168 yards and a score.
 
Demetrius Battle led West Alabama rushers with 27 yards on 18 carries. Antonio Brown picked up 41 on 13 trips. Shegog paced DSU rushing with 38 yards on 17 carries.
 
Ten different receivers caught passes for West Alabama, led by Caeleb Bass and Darius Nalls with five receptions apiece. Bass' had 76 receiving yards and Nalls 56. Dohnte Meyers led the Statesmen with six grabs for 42 yards.
 
WORTH NOTING
West Alabama wasted two scoring opportunities in the first half, with Gabe Dunkle missing a 22-yard field goal with 6:04 left in the first quarter. A lost fumble by Tucker Melton on first-and-goal at the Delta State 2-yard line ended a 15-play, 95-yard drive without points.
 
UWA had four trips to the red zone in the game and came away with just seven points. DSU was 2-for-2 in the red zone.
 
Four Tiger drives ended in turnovers, three lost fumbles and an interception. UWA forced one DSU turnover, a fumble recovered by Stanford early in the fourth quarter.
 
West Alabama ran 87 plays in the game compared to 66 by DSU. The Tigers racked up 25 first downs to the Statesmen's 16.
 
UP NEXT
West Alabama's season is over. Delta State will wait until Sunday to find out an opponent in the first round of the NCAA Regional that begins next Saturday.
