Anderson Named First Team All-American by AFCA

WACO, Texas - West Alabama linebacker Michael Anderson was named to the 2022 AFCA Division II Coaches' All-American Team, announced by the American Football Coaches Association. Anderson was voted as a First Team selection. 
 
This is Anderson's fifth accolade this season. Anderson was named Preseason All-GSC, First Team All-GSC, GSC Defensive Player of the Year, and D2CCA First Team All-Super Region Two.
 
"Mike Anderson has been a great leader within our program. Being named an All-American is a great honor," head coach Brett Gilliland said. "He deserves this honor and means a lot to our program. It is great seeing his success on and off the field after all the hard work he has put in. Our program is better because of him coming through it."
 
Anderson served as UWA's team captain this season. Anderson led the GSC and the Tigers with 96 tackles, 69 solo and 27 assisted tackles. He ranked sixth nationally in solo tackles. 
 
The graduate student from Chatom, Alabama, Anderson ranked fifth in the GSC for tackles for loss with 10 for 36 yards. He also ranked 11th in the conference with three sacks. He added two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, and three QB hurries on the season. 
 
Anderson made a career-high of 13 tackles in the 34-31 victory over Valdosta State on Oct. 8 this season. 
 
Anderson joined the UWA football team in 2017. He ended his career with 167 tackles, 118 solo and 49 assisted tackles over 38 games as a Tiger. He had 14 tackles for loss for 43 yards and three sacks for 11 yards. Anderson had an interception, two pass breakups, four QB hurries, five forced fumbles, and two fumbles recovered.
 
Members of the AFCA Coaches' All-American First Team will receive a plaque commemorating their selection to the team. 
 
The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all five divisions. What makes these teams so special is that they are the only ones chosen exclusively by the men who know the players the best — the coaches themselves. 
 
The AFCA's Division II All-America Selection Committee is made up of three head coaches from each of the AFCA's seven districts, one of whom serves as a district chairman, along with another head coach who serves as the chairman of the selection committee. The coaches in each district are responsible for ranking the top players in their respective districts prior to a conference call between the district chairmen and the committee chairman on which the teams are chosen.
