Newell Signs with Edmonton Elks

EDMONTON, Canada -  West Alabama defensive back TJ Newell signed a contract with the Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League.
 
"I can't express how excited I am to head to Canada to play the sport I love," Newell said. "It is really an honor to have this opportunity that could potentially change my life and the people around me."
 
"I would like to thank everyone who has helped and stood by me along the way, especially Coach Gilliland, Coach Sisa, and Coach Hampton," Newell said.
 
Newell had 37 tackles over 11 games this season. He had 31 solo and seven assisted tackles. Newell also had five pass deflections. He had a season-high of six tackles against West Florida on Oct. 29. 
 
Newell had 68 tackles, 59 solo-stops, over 23 games during his career at UWA that ran from 2020-22.
 
Prior to attending UWA, Newell played at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
