Men's Basketball Drops Road Game at Union, 87-66

JACKSON, Tenn. – Kortrijk Miles scored 19 points with 10 rebounds, but the 23rd ranked West Alabama men's basketball could not defeat Union University, falling 87-66 inside Fred DeLay Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

For Miles, it was his tenth double-double of the season and his 23rd game with double figures. GSC's second-leading scorer hit seven of 12 from the field and five of six at the free-throw line.

West Alabama (21-5, 14-4 Gulf South Conference) made 24 of its 60 (40.0 percent) from the field, including just six of 21 (28.6 percent) from behind the arc. The Tigers were able to make 12 of 18 (66.7 percent) from the free-throw line in the game.

Justin Allison scored 14 points for the Tigers, and Calvin Finch had a career-high 15.

Union (20-6, 14-4 GSC) fared better from the floor, hitting 35 of its 56 (62.5 percent) attempts from the floor. In three-point range, the Bulldogs knocked down eight of 19 (42.1 percent) and saw nine of 14 (64.3 percent) go in at the free-throw line.

Tyree Boykin led Union in scoring with 28 points. He hit 10 of 18 (55.6 percent) from the field, including four of eight (50.0 percent) from beyond the arc. He also added four of five (80.0 percent) at the line.

In the effort, West Alabama outrebounded Union 37-23 and scored more second-chance points, 14-4. In their fiercest competition yet, the Tigers kept their head, committing only 12 fouls as the Bulldogs had 18.

As it stands now, Union and West Alabama have the same conference record at 14-4, and the regular season GSC title can go to either team or both. If the Tigers win out and Union drops just one match, West Alabama will be GSC regular season champs.

UWA will continue its battle to stay on top, hosting Delta State University on Thursday, Feb. 24. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. inside Pruitt Hall Gymnasium.
