UWA Softball Splits DH with Mississippi College in GSC Opener

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama's softball team split the opening day of Gulf South Conference play in the doubleheader matchup with Mississippi College Saturday at UWA Softball Complex. 

The Tigers are now 6-6 overall and are 1-1 in GSC play. The Choctaws are 6-5 overall and also 1-1 in the conference.

Game One
The Tigers defeated the Choctaws 4-3 in game one of the GSC doubleheader against Mississippi College.

Freshman Taylor Clegg went 2-for-2 from the plate. The Gordo, Ala. native had a double, two RBIs, and one run scored. 

MC started things off in the first inning, scoring one run, giving the Chotaws a 1-0 lead over the Tigers. 

The lead didn't last long for Mississippi College. In the bottom of the first inning, Hannah Mynard doubled to left center, driving in Kacy Noland, bringing the game to a 1-1 tie. 

In the second inning, the Tigers scored two more runs. Clegg's double, scored LP Trammell, allowing the Tigers to take a 2-1 lead over the Choctaws. Cassie Matlock's RBI single drove in Clegg, improving the lead to 3-1. 

Neither team scored in the third, fourth, or fifth inning.

In the sixth inning, Clegg's sacrifice fly scored Trammell, giving the Tigers the 4-1 advantage over the Choctaws. 

In the seventh inning, Mississippi College had back-to-back homeruns, cutting UWA's lead to 4-3. 

The Tigers were able to close out the seventh inning and claim the 4-3 win over the Choctaws in game one.

Kacy Noland (2-1) pitched a complete game. The Carrollton, Ala. native gave up three earned runs while striking out two.

Game Two
West Alabama took a 2-0 defeat from Mississippi College in game two of the doubleheader.

Cassie Matlock went 1-for-2 from the plate. She was the only Tiger to produce a hit.

Neither team had scored until the fifth inning. In the top of the fifth inning, the Choctaws hit a two-run homer to gain the 2-0 lead over the Tigers.

The Tigers  couldn't land a hit or a run after the fifth inning, allowing MC to claim the 2-0 victory over UWA.

Mynard (1-2) absorbed the loss for the Tigers. The Enterprise, Ala. native gave up an earned run while striking out six.

The Tigers return to action in a single game against Mississippi College on Sunday, Feb. 20. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
