Mississippi College Wins Series over UWA

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama took an 11-3 defeat from Mississippi College on Sunday afternoon at UWA Softball Complex. The Tigers dropped the Gulf South Conference series to the Choctaws.

The Tigers dropped to 6-7 overall and are now 1-2 in GSC play. The Choctaws improved to 6-5 and are now 2-1 in the conference. 

Hannah Mynard went 2-for-3 from the plate. Cassie Matlock, Rylie Grantz, Kendall Johnson, Peyton Coots, and Nicole Buccieri all collected one RBI.

In the top first inning, the Choctaws first basemen homered to left field, giving MC a 1-0 advantage over the Tigers. In the bottom of the first inning, UWA had one hit and two were left on base, but no runs were scored. 

In the second inning, a Tiger fielding error allowed Mississippi College two runs, while the Choctaws also scored off an RBI single, giving MC a 3-0 advantage. 

In the third inning, Grantz's sacrifice fly scored Mynard, cutting the Choctaws lead to 4-1.

The bats came alive for Mississippi College in the fourth inning. The Choctaws scored seven runs, improving their lead to 11-1. 

The Tigers added a run in the fourth inning. Matlock reached on a fielder's choice, driving in Buccieri. 

UWA scored the last run of the day in the final inning when Johnson singled to right field, bringing in Grace Self.

The Tigers could not score any more runs, allowing Mississippi College to claim the 11-3 win over West Alabama. 

Kaeleigh Crutchfield (3-3) absorbed the loss for the Tigers. She pitched 1.1 innings and gave up three earned runs while striking out one.

The Tigers return to action Friday, Feb. 25 when they open a three-game series against Columbus State. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
