Tigers Fall in Battle with Columbus State

COLUMBUS, Ga. - West Alabama softball team dropped the single game 12-8 in the three-game weekend series to Columbus State on Friday at Cougar Field.

The Tigers dropped to 6-8 overall and remained 1-2 in GSC play, while the Cougars improved to 6-7 overall. 

Kacy Noland and Rylie Grantz led the Tigers. Noland went 3-for-4 from the plate, scored two runs, and had two RBIs. Grantz also went 3-for-4 at the plate and had three RBIs.

In the first inning, Grantz RBI single scored Noland, giving UWA a 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, Lexy House singled to shortstop, driving in Karley McDaniel, advancing the lead to 2-0 over the Cougars. McDaniel pinch ran for Kelsie Gilliam. The Tigers added two more runs when Grantz singled, scoring House and Noland to improve the Tigers lead to 4-0.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Cougars cut UWA's lead to 4-2 when CSU second baseman Elston hit a two-run homer. 

In the third inning, Kacy Noland singled up the middle, scoring Kendall Johnson, improving the lead to 5-2. Columbus State battled back and scored three more runs, bringing the game to a 5-5 tie.

The Tigers pressed on in the fourth inning, adding two runs from Taylor Clegg and LP Trammell, giving UWA the 7-5 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Columbus State scored three more runs and gained the one run advantage over West Alabama and never trailed again. 

Neither team scored in the fifth inning. Noland singled, driving in Trammell in the sixth inning to tie the game at 8-8. The Cougars rallied in the sixth inning, adding four runs to gain a 12-8 lead over the Tigers.

UWA had one hit and one left on the base in the seventh inning, but it was not enough. Columbus State claimed the 12-8 win over West Alabama.

Kaeleigh Crutchfield absorbed the loss for the Tigers. She pitched 2.1 innings, did not give up any earned runs, and striked out two.

The Tigers close out the weekend series with a doubleheader against Columbus State on Saturday at noon.
