UWA Falls in GSC Matchup Against DSU

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama women's basketball team took a 71-68 defeat from Delta State in a Gulf South Conference matchup on Thursday in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium. The Tigers dropped to 15-11 overall and are now 9-9 in GSC play. The Statesmen improved to 11-12 overall and are 9-9 in the conference.

Three Tigers scored in double figures to lead UWA's offense. Tazsa Garrett-Hammett led the Tigers with 31 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Bria Dent added 16 points with nine points. Justyna Butler scored 10 points and had three assists. 

UWA shot 44.9 percent (22-of-49) from the field, 88.9 percent (16-of-18) from the free throw line, and 47.1  percent (8-of-17) from beyond the arc.

In the first quarter, Delta State out scored West Alabama 20-18, but the Tigers battled back in the second quarter and defeated the Statesmen 19-16 to close out the half with a 37-36 lead over DSU.

The Tigers stayed strong in the third quarter, scoring 16 points compared to the Statesmen's 13 points, improving UWA's lead to 53-49 to close out the quarter.

Delta State had its best quarter in the fourth quarter, out scoring the Tigers 22-15 to close out the game and claim the 71-68 win over UWA.

DSU shot 51.5 percent (24-of-47) from the field, 37.5 percent (3-of-8) from the free throw line, and 69 percent (20-of-29) from beyond the arc.

The Statesmen forward Zyaire Ewing posted a double-double. She scored 21 points, and had 11 rebounds to lead DSU's offense. 

The Tigers host Mississippi College on Saturday with a tip-off time at 2 p.m. inside Pruitt Hall Gymnasium in Livingston, Ala.
