Tigers Fall in Regular Season Final to MC, 61-51

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama women's basketball team fell to Mississippi College 61-51 to wrap up the regular season on Saturday in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium. The Tigers finished seventh in GSC play.

With the loss, the Tigers dropped to 15-12 overall and are 9-10 in GSC play. Mississippi College improved to 15-12 overall and are 10-9 in the conference. 

Tazsa Garrett-Hammett scored 24 points in the matchup. The LaGrange, Ga. native went 8-for-19 from the field and 8-for-9 from the free throw line. The senior forward added nine rebounds. 

Bria Dent was the only other Tiger to score in double figures. The Birmingham, Ala. native scored 11 points, six rebounds, and three steals.

UWA shot 30.4 percent (17-of-56) from the field, 73.7  percent (14-of-19) from the free throw line, and 23.1  percent (3-of-13) from beyond the arc.

In the first quarter, the Choctaws out scored the Tigers 23-14. West Alabama battled back in the second quarter, scoring nine points compared to the Choctaws eight points. Garrett-Hammett put up six of the nine points in the second quarter, while Dent added a three-pointer. UWA trailed 31-23 heading into halftime. 

Coming out of the break, Mississippi College put up 16 points, while West Alabama only put up five. Garrett-Hammett made a free throw, Dent added a jumper, and Zoe Watts made her layup.

In the fourth quarter, the Tigers went on a 15-0 run to cut the Choctaws lead to 47-43. With 4:23 remaining, the run was broken by a MC layup, making the score 49-43. Justyna Butler knocked down one free throw at the 3:28 mark, cutting the Choctaws lead to 49-44. 

Mississippi College went on an 8-4 run at the 3:34 mark in the fourth quarter. With 1:15 remaining, UWA scored three free throws to cut the Choctaws lead to 57-49. MC held on to the lead for the remainder of the time to claim the 61-49 win over West Alabama. 

Mississippi College shot 42 percent (21-of-50) from the field, 88.2 percent (15-of-17) from the free throw line, and 40 percent (4-of-10) from beyond the arc.

The Choctaws forward Amelia Bell scored 17 points, five  rebounds, two steals, and had two blocks.

The Tigers hit the road and head to Valdosta, Ga. for the first round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament to take on Valdosta State. Tip-off will be announced at a later date.
