Tigers Split Doubleheader with Columbus State

COLUMBUS, Ga. - West Alabama softball team split the doubleheader with Columbus State. The Tigers defeated the Cougars 5-4 in game one, then dropped game two 1-0 Saturday evening at Cougar Field. 

With the doubleheader split, Columbus State won the three-game series. The Tigers are now 7-9 overall and remain 1-2 in GSC play. The Cougars are now 7-8 overall.

Game One
West Alabama defeated Columbus State 5-4 in the first game of the doubleheader. 

LP Trammell went 1-for-2 from the plate. She scored two runs and collected two RBIs.

Trammell started things off for the Tigers in the second inning. The Germantown, Miss. native hit a two-run homer to left field, bringing Taylor Clegg home, giving UWA a 2-0 lead over CSU.

The Cougars responded in the bottom of the second inning when second baseman Elston homered to right field, cutting the Tigers lead to 2-1.

The Tigers scored three runs in the fourth inning, improving the lead to 5-1. Hannah Mynard reached on a CSU error, allowing Cassie Matlock, Trammell, and Clegg to score. 

Columbus State scored one run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth inning, but the Tigers held on to the lead to claim the 5-4 victory over the Cougars. 

Mynard improved her record to 2-2. The Enterprise, Ala. native pitched a complete game, giving up three earned runs, and striking out three.

Game Two
West Alabama took a 1-0 defeat from Columbus State in the second game of the doubleheader. 

UWA only produced one hit compared to the Cougars five hits. Cassie Matlock went 1-for-3 at the plate. 

The only run scored in the game came from CSU in the bottom of the second inning.

Neither team scored the remainder of the game, allowing Columbus State to claim the 1-0 victory over West Alabama.

Kacy Noland (2-2) took the loss for the Tigers. The Carrollton, Ala. native pitched the complete game, giving up one earned run and striking out two. 

CSU pitcher Hannah Corbin (6-2) claimed the win in the matchup. She did not give up any earned runs and struck out seven.

The Tigers return to action Wednesday, March 2 to take on Miles College in a doubleheader.. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at UWA Softball Complex.
