Tigers Split First Day at the Gulf Coast Invitational

GULF SHORES, Ala. - West Alabama softball team split Opening Day at the Gulf Coast Invitational. The Tigers defeated Lubbock Christian 5-4 in the first game of the day, then took a 8-0 defeat from West Texas A&M. The Tigers start off the season with a 1-1 overall record. 

Game One
The Tigers held off the Lubbock Christian to come away with the 5-4 victory Sunday afternoon.

UWA started off strong and took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Kacy Noland singled, driving in Grace Self and LP Trammell

In the second inning, Kendall Johnson scored off of Kelsie Gilliams single, giving the Tigers a 3-0 advantage. 

Lubbock Christian came firing back in the fourth inning, earning two runs to cut the Tigers lead 3-2.

The Chaps scored another two runs in the fifth inning to take the lead over the Tigers, 4-3.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Tigers fired back. Self's RBI single drove in Gilliam to tie the game 4-4.

UWA was able to take the game when Hannah Mynard singled and drove in Cassie Matlock, allowing UWA to claim the 5-4 victory over Lubbock Christian.

Kaeleigh Crutchfield (1-0) pitched the complete game. She gave up one earned run on four hits and seven strikeouts. 

Game Two
West Texas A&M scored eight runs in the game of the Gulf Coast Invitational to claim the 8-0 victory over the Tigers. 

UWA produced five hits. Matlock, Noland, Mynard, Johnson, and Rylie Grantz each had one.

Noland (0-1) took the loss for theTigers. She went four innings giving up one earned run off nine hits.

The Tigers close out the Gulf Coast Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 5. First game will be against Lee University at 11:15 a.m., followed by the second game against Columbus State at 3:15 p.m.
