VSU Ends UWA’s Season in First Round of GSC Championship Tournament

VALDOSTA, Ga. - West Alabama women's basketball team took a 72-41 defeat from Valdosta State in the first round of the Gulf South Conference Championship Tournament on Tuesday at The Complex, ending the Tigers season.

The Tigers closed out the season with a 15-13 overall record and ended the regular season with a 9-10 GSC record. The Blazers improved to 23-4 overall and will advance to semifinals to battle Lee University. 

UWA shot 34.9 percent (15-of-43) from the field and 76.9 percent (10-of-13) from the free throw line. 

Tazsa Garrett-Hammett was the only Tiger to score in double figures. She scored 14 points and had four rebounds in the matchup. 

In the first quarter, West Alabama was out scored by Valdosta State 17-8. Bria Dent made two jumpers, along with Ella Felkins and Jada Golden.

The Blazers went on a 11-0 run to start the second quarter. Garrett-Hammett snapped the run with a layup. The Tigers put up six more points to close out the half. VSU had the 31-16 advantage over UWA heading into halftime.

West Alabama had its best quarter coming out of the break. The Tigers posted 22 points and out scored the Blazers 22-17.

In the fourth quarter, the Blazers had their best quarter, putting up 24 points compared to the Tigers 3. Valdosta State closed out the game with a 72-41 win over West Alabama.

VSU shot 46.4 percent (26-of-56) from the field, 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from beyond the arc, and 65 percent (13-of-20) from the free throw line.

Nicole Heyn led the Blazers offense with 19 points, six rebounds, four steals, and two blocks in the matchup.
