Tiger Softball Drops Two to West Florida

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama softball team dropped two games to West Florida in the Gulf South Conference doubleheader at UWA Softball Complex Friday evening. The Tigers dropped the first game 13-9 and took a 8-2 defeat from the Argonauts in game two. 

The Tigers dropped to 12-11 overall and are now 4-4 in GSC play. The Argonauts are still ranked number one in the conference with a 11-0 record and improved to 16-3 overall.

Game One
West Alabama's seven errors and West Florida's 10 hits allowed the Argonauts to defeat the Tigers 13-9 in game one of the doubleheader. 

Cassie Matlock led UWA from the plate. She had two of the Tigers six hits. The senior outfielder collected one RBI and scored two runs. 

West Alabama had a strong start in the first inning. The Tigers scored four runs, had two hits, and one left on base. Matlock started it off and singled through the right side, scoring Taylor Clegg. A sacrifice fly from Nicole Buccieri brought Hannah Mynard across the plate. Kelsie Gilliam singled and advanced to second on the throw, scoring LP Trammell and Matlock.

The Argonauts pushed four runs across the plate in the top of the third inning to bring the game to a 4-4 tie. 

UWA had five big runs in the third inning, allowing the Tigers to take the 9-5 lead. Matlock scored off a wild pitch to start the inning. A big triple from Kacy Noland brought Kendall Johnson, Grace Self, and Mary Grace Sheffield across the plate. Sheffield pinch ran for Buccieri. The last run of the inning came from Noland when Clegg reached on a UWF error. 

In the fifth, sixth, and seventh inning, the Argonauts combined for a total of nine scored runs to claim the 13-9 win over the Tigers. Two of the runs were a solo shot home run, while one was a two-run homer. Two of the three home runs were from UWF outfielder Jessica Ford. 

Hannah Mynard (6-3) took the loss for the Tigers. She scattered five hits and allowed four runs over three innings pitched. The Enterprise, Ala. native struck out one and walked two. Noland pitched four innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits. 

UWF Jeya Prasad (5-0) pitched 3.2 innings and claimed the win for the Argonauts. She did not give up any earned runs, struck out one, and walked four. 

UWF Ford led the Argonauts from the plate. She had three of the 10 hits, collected five RBIs, and scored two runs.

Game Two
The Argonauts pounded out 12 hits compared to the Tigers six hits to defeat UWA 8-2 in game two of the doubleheader. 

The Argonauts scored three runs in both the first and third inning. All the runs in the third inning were from UWF Madelyn Vasquez's three-run homer, bringing two of her teammates across the plate. 

UWA combined for a total of three hits over the third and fourth inning. In those two innings, the Tigers had a total of four left on base and were not able to bring anyone home.

The fifth inning was a scoreless inning for both teams. UWF had three more hits and added a run in the sixth inning to improve the lead to 7-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers battled back and Hannah Mynard slammed a two-run homer to right field, scoring Lexy House. House pinch ran for Nicole Buccieri, cutting the Argonauts lead to 7-2. This was Mynard's third home run of the season. 

The Argonauts had two hits in the seventh inning, one being a double that scored UWF catcher Angela Agurkis, extending West Florida's lead to 8-2. 

UWA produced one hit in the seventh inning, but it was not enough. West Florida closed out the game with a 8-2 win over West Alabama.

Cassie Matlock also led the Tigers from the plate in game two. The senior went 2-for-3. 

Kaeleigh Crutchfield (4-5) absorbed the loss for the Tigers. The Clinton, Miss. native scattered 12 hits and allowed eight runs over seven innings. 

UWF pitcher Montana Young (3-0) claimed the win for the Argonauts. She pitched a complete game, gave up two earned runs, struck out five, and walked three.

The Tigers return to action Saturday to close out the three-game series against West Florida in a single game. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at UWA Softball Complex.
