UWA Takes Down St. Mary's in Men's Tennis

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Tiger men's tennis team go back in the winning column Saturday afternoon by defeating St. Mary's (TX) 4-3 at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex. 
 
"We won a battle against a very good St. Mary's team today. The day started with 25 miles per hour winds, gusts of wind up to 50 mph, and the wind chill was about 19 degrees," head tennis coach Jeff Beaman said. 
 
UWA improves to 3-4 on the season and the Rattlers fall to 10-2.
 
"We talked about how the conditions are the same for both teams and it would come down to who was tougher. We hope the men were able to learn a lot from today's win," Beaman said. 
 
St. Mary's took the doubles point by winning two of the three matches. Ilia Dehodiuk and Lucas Hammond's match was left unfinished. 
 
The Tigers needed to win four of the six singles courts to get the win and that is exactly what they did. 
 
Ilari Vesanen won #1 singles against Jake Faryniarz 6-3, 6-0. Dehodiuk won #3 singles 6-7, 6-3, 6-4. Nuutti Jokinen and Patricio Nieto both got wins at #4 and #6 and were able to help the Tigers come back and defeat the Rattlers. 
 
UWA will return to action on Wednesday against Montevallo and Mississippi Gulf Coach Community College at the Vaughan Tennis Complex.
