Tiger Softball Takes Two from West Georgia

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama softball team claimed the doubleheader sweep over West Georgia Saturday evening at UWA Softball Complex. UWA defeated UWG in game one 7-4, and pushed past the Wolves 5-4 in game two. 

The Tigers improved to 16-13 overall and are now 8-6 in GSC play. The Wolves dropped to 11-20 overall and are 4-12 in the conference.

Game One 
The Tigers pounded out 10 hits with two triples and a home run to claim the 7-4 victory over West Georgia in game one of the doubleheader.

Three Tigers went 2-for-3 from the plate. Taylor Clegg, Kelsie Gilliam, and Cassie Matlock all had a .667 batting average in game one. Clegg collected two RBIs and scored one run. Matlock collected one RBI, while Gilliam scored two runs. 

The Tigers scored two runs in the second inning when bases were loaded and Kacy Noland walked, bringing LP Trammell across the plate. Clegg's sacrifice fly scored Gilliam giving the Tigers a 2-0 advantage. 

After the top of the third, the Tigers trailed 3-2. Trammell's RBI single brought the game to a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the third inning. 

The Tigers pushed a total of four runs across the plate in the fourth and fifth inning combined. In the fourth inning, Clegg tripled, scoring Noland. Matlock's sacrifice fly then brought home Clegg. 

Kendall Johnson hit her first home run of the season in the fifth inning, drilling a two-run homer over the center field wall to claim the 7-4 victory over West Georgia.

Hannah Mynard claimed the win and improved her record to 8-3. She scattered 10 hits, gave up two earned runs, struck out eight, and walked five over seven innings. 

UWG Kaley Dowdy (4-4) absorbed the loss for the Wolves. She gave up seven earned runs, struck out two, and walked four over 4.2 innings of work.

Game Two 
Four runs scored in the sixth inning along with Trammell's double in the seventh inning allowed UWA to push past UWG 5-4 in game two. 

Rylie Grantz led the Tigers from the plate, going 2-for-3 and collected one RBI. Matlock collected two RBIs.


The Tigers trailed 4-0 heading into the sixth inning. UWA pounded out four hits and pushed four across the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game 4-4. Grantz doubled, driving in Lexy House. Clegg's RBI single scored Grantz. A huge triple from Matlock then brought Clegg and Johnson across the plate. 

In the sixth inning, Trammell doubled bringing Karley McDaniel home to claim the 5-4 victory over West Georgia. McDaniel pinch ran for Nicole Buccieri

Breanna Fortenberry (2-0) claimed the win for the Tigers. She struck out one over one inning. Noland scattered eight hits, giving up two earned runs, striking out eight, and walking two over six innings of work.

Kya Draper took the loss for UWG. She gave up three runs and walked two.

The Tigers close out the three-game series against West Georgia with a single game on Sunday. First pitch is slated for noon at UWA Softball Complex.
