UWA Softball Sweeps Shorter in DH

ROME, Ga. - West Alabama softball team defeated Shorter 6-1 in the first game of the doubleheader and claimed the 2-1 victory in an extra inning over the Hawks in game two on Saturday afternoon at Alto Park Softball Complex. 

With the wins, the Tigers improved to 11-9 overall and 3-2 in GSC play. The Hawks dropped to 4-16 overall and are now 1-7 in the conference.

Game One
The Tigers pounded out nine hits compared to the Hawks three to lead UWA to a 6-1 victory over Shorter University in game one of the doubleheader. 

Kacy Noland and Cassie Matlock led the Tigers at the plate. Noland went 3-for 4 from the plate and collected two RBIs. Matlock went 2-for-2 and collected one RBI.

In the first inning, the Tigers scored three runs. Grace Self doubled to left field, bringing Hannah Mynard and Taylor Clegg home. Mary Grace Sheffield added another run from Nicole Buccieri's double, gaining the 3-0 advantage over Shorter. 

The Tigers extended the lead in the second inning when Noland's RBI single scored Kendall Johnson.

Another Noland hit came in the fourth inning when the senior first baseman scored Johnson again. 

The final run of the game came in the fifth inning when Grace Self scored off of Cassie Matlock's double. The Tigers closed out the game and claimed the 6-1 victory over the Tigers. 

Noland (3-2) claimed the win for UWA. The Carrollton, Ala. native pitched three innings giving up no earned runs.

Game Two
After Shorter had tied the game in the seventh inning, UWA landed two hits to bring home Kacy Noland in the extra inning, allowing the Tigers to claim the 2-1 victory over the Hawks in game two of the doubleheader.

Noland and LP Trammell led the Tigers at the plate. Noland went 3-for-4, collected one RBI, and scored one run, while Trammell went 2-for-2 at the plate. 

Neither team had scored, until Noland hit a home run in the six inning, gaining the 1-0 lead for the Tigers. 

The Hawks got on the scoreboard in the seventh inning, bringing the game to a 1-1 tie which extended the game to an eighth inning. 

Hannah Mynard doubled through the left side, driving in Noland in the eight inning, allowing UWA to claim the 2-1 victory.

Mynard (4-2) pitched a complete game. The Enterprise, Ala. native gave up one earned run on six hits while striking out 10.

The Tigers close out the three game series with a single game on Sunday at Alto Park Softball Complex in Rome, Georgia. First pitch is set for noon.
