UWA Wins GSC Series at Shorter

ROME, Ga. - West Alabama softball team defeated Shorter 9-3 to close out the Gulf South Conference weekend series on Sunday at Alto Park Softball Complex. With the Tigers sweep over the Hawks in the doubleheader yesterday, UWA wins the GSC series. 

The Tigers improved to 12-9 overall and are 4-2 in GSC play. The Hawks dropped to 4-17 overall and are now 1-8 in the conference. 

Taylor Clegg and Hannah Mynard led the Tigers from the plate. Clegg went 3-for-4 at the plate, scored one run, and had two RBIs. Mynard went 2-for-4, scored two runs, and had two RBIs. 

UWA got on the scoreboard in the first inning when Cassie Matlock RBI single scored Kacy Noland.

In the third inning the Tigers extended the lead to 3-0 when Mynard drilled a two-run homer, bringing Matlock across the plate. 

Shorter had three hits and scored two runs in the fourth inning to cut the Tigers lead to 3-2.

The Tigers pounded out five hits and scored four runs in the sixth inning to gain the 8-2 advantage. Freshman third baseman Clegg hit her first home run in a UWA jersey.

In the seventh inning the Tigers scored another run when Mynard scored off of LP Trammell's sacrifice fly.

Shorter had two hits, one run, and two left on base in the bottom of the seventh inning. UWA held the lead and closed out the game with a 9-3 victory over the Hawks.

Kaeleigh Crutchfield (5-4) claimed the win for the Tigers. She pitched 2.2 innings and did not give up any earned runs.

Mynard threw 4.1 innings for the Tigers. She gave up three earned runs while striking out one.

The Tigers open up the GSC weekend series against West Florida in a single game on Friday, March 11. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. at UWA Softball Complex.
