Mynard Throws No-Hitter, Tigers Rallied in Game Two to Split DH with Union

JACKSON, Tenn. - West Alabama softball team rallied in game two to split the doubleheader with Union in a Gulf South Conference three-game series. The Tigers took a 7-2 defeat in game one but shutout the Bulldogs 8-0 in game two on Friday at Fesmire Softball Field.

The Tigers are now 21-19 overall and 11-12 in GSC play. The Bulldogs are 14-25 overall and 8-15 in the conference.


Game One

The Tigers took a 7-2 defeat from Union in game one of the doubleheader.

UWA collected a total of seven hits. Kelsie Gilliam had two hits. Cassie Matlock, Nicole Buccieri, Hannah Mynard, Lexy House, and Kendall Johnson had one. 

The Tigers trailed 5-0, heading into the top of the third inning before pushing one run across the plate. Gilliam reached on a fielder's choice bringing Johnson home.

In the fourth inning, the Bulldogs pushed two more runs across the plate to gain a 7-1 advantage. 

UWA added one more run from Matlock off a Union shortstop error, but it was not enough. The Bulldogs closed out the game with a 7-2 victory over the Tigers. 

Kacy Noland (4-7) was tagged with the loss. She scattered six hits, gave up five earned runs, walked three, and struck out one over 1.2 innings of work. 

Union's pitcher Laken DiStefano claimed the win for the Bulldogs. She gave up one earned run, struck out eight, and walked two over seven innings.

Game Two
The Tigers pounded out 11 hits and Mynard threw a no-hitter to shutout Union 8-0 in game two of the doubleheader. This was Mynard's first no-hitter since joining the Tigers in 2021.

Mynard's (5-7) no-hitter claimed the win for the Tigers. She gave up no earned runs and struck out three. 

Matlock and Buccieri collected a pair of hits. Gilliam, Noland, Mynard, House, Grantz, Taylor Clegg, and LP Trammell had one hit. Mynard added a double. 

The Tigers fired off four hits in the first inning and scored three runs to get things started for UWA. 

The Tigers combined for a total of five runs over the second, third, and fourth inning to close out the game in the fifth inning and come away with the 8-0 victory over Union. 

Union's pitcher Reese Taylor (5-7) absorbed the loss for the Bulldogs. She gave up three earned runs over .2 innings.

The Tigers return to action Saturday with a single game against Union. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Fesmire Softball Field.
