UWA Softball Takes GSC Series from Union

JACKSON, Tenn. - West Alabama softball team defeated Union 9-2 in game three of the Gulf South Conference series Saturday evening at Fesmire Softball Field. With the win, the Tigers won the series.

The Tigers improved to 22-19 overall and are now 12-12 in GSC play. The Bulldogs dropped to 14-26 overall and are 8-16 in the conference.

UWA pounded out 11 hits. Cassie Matlock went 4-for-4 from the plate. She had two RBIs and scored three runs. Matlock added a two run homer, her second home run of the season. 

Kacy Noland and Kelsie Gilliam each had a pair of hits. Noland drilled two three-run homers, collected six RBIs, and scored two runs. 

Taylor Clegg, Hannah Mynard, and Lexy House each added a hit.

The Tigers trailed 1-0 heading into the top of the third inning. Noland drilled a three-run homer in the third inning to give UWA a 3-1 lead. 

In the fifth inning, Noland hit another three-run home and gained the 6-1 advantage for the Tigers. Rylie Grantz's sacrifice bunt, scored Mary Grace Sheffield, improving the lead to 7-1. Sheffield pinch ran for Nicole Buccieri.

The Tigers added two more runs in the sixth inning when Matlock hit a two-run homer. 

Union pushed one run across the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning to trim UWA's lead. The Tigers closed out the game with a 9-2 victory over the Bulldogs to win the GSC series.

Hannah Mynard (11-5) pitched a complete game for the Tigers, giving up two earned runs, walking four, and striking out seven. 

Union pitcher Laken DiSefano (4-8) absorbed the loss for the Bulldogs. She gave up nine earned runs, walked two, and struck out four over 5.1 innings of work.

The Tigers return to action Friday to host Delta State in a single game. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. at UWA Softball Complex.
