Women's Tennis Clinch GSC Regular Season Championship

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The 14th ranked West Alabama women's tennis team won the Gulf South Conference Regular Season Championship with the 6-1 win over 19th ranked Auburn-Montgomery on Friday afternoon at the AUM Tennis Complex. 
 
UWA improves to 15-4 and 9-0 in GSC play. The Tigers have now won 22 straight GSC regular season matches dating back to 2020 and have won three of the last four GSC Regular Season Championships. AUM drops to 14-6 overall and 8-1 in conference action.
 
"A big win against a very good team today," head tennis coach Jeff Beaman said. "I am proud of our women for clinching the regular season championship today."
 
The Tigers swept doubles to earn the first point of the match. 
 
Ming Deewajee was the first to finish in singles defeating Ane Ibarra 6-3, 6-1. Katia de la Garza defeated Estefania Garcia 6-3, 6-4. 
 
Haina Franco clinched the match for the Tigers at No. 3 singles against Nahia Izco. Franco lost the first set 6-3 and bounced back to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-3 to give UWA the victory. 
 
Almudena Sanz defeated Sofia Navarro 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Valeria Arevalo defeated Alba de la Torre 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 winning the tiebreaker 13-11. 
 
Heden Ly was the only Tiger to lose a match and it was against Ana Villalvazo at No. 4 singles 5-7, 6-1, 0-1 with the tiebreaker being 10-4. 
 
With the win, West Alabama locks up the No. 1 seed for the GSC Women's Tennis Championships that will be played April 28th-30th in Montgomery, Ala. 
 
UWA will return to action on Tuesday at Montevallo with the first serve at 1 p.m. AUM travels to Valdosta State on Wednesday.
