Tigers Defeat Delta State 7-6

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama softball team defeated Delta State 7-6 Friday evening at UWA Softball Complex. The Tigers wrap up the three-game series Saturday with a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. Senior recognition will begin around 12:35 p.m. 

 The Tigers improved to 23-19 on the season and are now 13-12 in GSC play. Delta State dropped to 19-24 overall and are now 8-14 in the conference.

Nicole Buccieri went 4-for-4 from the plate, leading UWA hitters. Kelsie Gilliam tallied three hits. Cassie Matlock, Taylor Clegg, Riley Sullivan, and Kendall Johnson added a hit. Gilliam stole two bases while Lexy House and Mary Grace Sheffield also stole a base. 

Heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Tigers trailed 3-2. UWA then pushed four runs across the plate to take the 6-3 lead. Sullivan singled up the middle then advanced to second on the throw, bringing Mynard and Buccieri home. Matlock singled to left field and also advanced to second on the throw, scoring Johnson and House. 

Delta State tallied three hits in the seventh inning and scored three runs, but UWA closed out the game with a 7-6 victory over the Statesmen. 

Hannah Mynard improved her record to 12-5. The junior pitcher gave up three earned runs on eight hits. She struck out four and walked four over seven innings of work. 

Lacey Coats (8-12) was tagged with the loss. She gave up five earned runs on nine hits, struck out three and walked four over 4.2 innings.
