UWA Softball Clinched GSC Championship Tournament Berth

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama softball team clinched a Gulf South Conference Championship Tournament berth after defeating Delta State 4-1 in game one of the final home series Saturday evening at UWA Softball Complex. The Tigers also took down DSU 5-2 in game two to sweep the Statesmen and win the GSC series.
 
The Tigers improved to 25-19 overall and are now 15-12 in GSC play. The Statesmen dropped to 19-24 overall and are 8-14 in the conference. 
 
Game 1
The Tigers defeated Delta State 4-1 in the first game of the doubleheader.
 
Kacy Noland (5-7) gave up only one earned run on two hits. She struck out four and walked seven over seven innings of work.
 
Cassie Matlock, Kelsie Gilliam, Nicole Buccieri, Hannah Mynard, and Noland combined for five hits. Mynard added a double while Matlock had a triple. Gilliam stole three bases, and Noland stole one. 
 
It was a late start for UWA as the Tigers were trailing 1-0  heading into the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers pushed three runs across the plate to take the 3-1 lead. 
 
Noland singled off a bunt in the fourth inning, bringing Gilliam across the plate. Buccieri tallied a hit, scoring Noland. Taylor Clegg's sacrifice bunt pushed Mary Grace Sheffield across the plate. Sheffield pinch ran for Buccieri.
 
The Tigers added one run in the fifth inning when Gilliam singled, bringing Matlock home. Neither team scored the remainder of the game, allowing the Tigers to claim the 4-1 victory over the Statesmen. 
 
Hannah Halse (8-5) absorbed the loss for the Statesmen. She gave up one earned run on two hits and struck out four over seven innings of work.

Game 2
The Tigers took down the Statesmen 5-2 in game two of the doubleheader. 
 
Noland led the Tigers from the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double and a triple. Matlock tallied a hit. Mynard and Trammell added a double. 
 
Noland started things off for the Tigers in the first inning when she tripled, scoring Gilliam. Delta State pushed two runs across the plate in the top of the fourth inning. The Tigers tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth when Mynard doubled to left field, scoring Noland. 
 
UWA added three more runs in the sixth inning to close the game out with a 5-2 victory in the seventh inning. 
 
Kaeleigh Crutchfield improved her record to 6-5. She gave up one earned run on eight hits over seven innings of work. 
 
DSU's pitcher Makenna Keeton (0-4) was tagged with the loss. She gave up two earned runs on six hits, struck out one, and walked two over six innings.

The Tigers return to action on Tuesday to battle Spring Hill in a doubleheader game. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Murray Field in Mobile, Alabama.
