UWA Softball Split DH with Spring Hill

MOBILE, Ala. - West Alabama softball team split the non-conference doubleheader with Spring Hill Tuesday afternoon at Murray Field. The Tigers destroyed the Badgers in game one 15-2 and took a 2-1 loss in game two. 

The Tigers improved to 26-20 overall and remained 15-12 in GSC play. The Badgers have a  24-15 overall record. 

Game One
The Tigers defeated Spring Hill 15-2 in game one of the doubleheader.

Taylor Clegg led the Tigers with three hits. Kelsie Gilliam, Nicole Buccieri, Hannah Mynard had a pair of hits. Cassie Matlock, Kacy Noland, Rylie Grantz, and LP Trammell all had a hit. Buccieri, Noland, Mynard, and Trammell added a double. 

The Tigers had a 4-0 lead heading into the third inning. In the top of the third, the Tigers pounded out five hits and scored seven runs to improve the lead to 11-0.

Spring Hill cut the lead to 11-2 when the Badgers scored two runs off a double by Ashely Oritz in the bottom of the third.

The Tigers pushed four more runs across the plate in the fourth inning to improve the lead to 15-2. 

UWA held onto the lead and closed out the game in the fifth inning to claim the 15-2 victory over SHC.

Mynard (13-5) claimed the win for the Tigers. She gave up two earned runs on four hits, struck out four, and walked two over five innings of work. 

Alexandra Ballester (13-7) absorbed the loss for the Badgers. She gave up five earned runs on nine hits, struck out one and walked four over three innings. 

Spring Hill's catcher Ashley Ortiz went 2-for-3 from the plate with a double and two RBIs.

Game Two 
The Tigers took a 2-1 defeat from the Badgers in game two of the doubleheader.

Matlock and Gilliam were the only Tigers to collect a hit. Matlock had a double. 

The Tigers score one run in the matchup in the first inning of the game. Noland's sacrifice fly scored Matlock. Spring Hill pushed one run across the plate in the bottom of the second to tie the game 1-1. The Badgers added a run in the fourth inning to take the 2-1 lead. Neither team scored the remainder of the game, allowing SHC to come away with a 2-1 victory over UWA.

Kaeleigh Crutchfield (6-6) was tagged with the loss. She gave up one earned run on five hits, struck out three and walked two over six innings of work.

Spring Hill's pitcher Paityn Desormeaux (7-3) claimed the win for the Badgers. She gave up one earned run on three hits, struck out four and walked two over seven innings.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday to open up the Gulf South Conference series against Alabama Huntsville with a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Charger Park in Huntsville, Alabama.
