Women's Tennis Sweeps MC to Advance to GSC Semifinals

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – West Alabama women's tennis opened the Gulf South Conference Championships with a 4-0 sweep over the Mississippi College Choctaws on Thursday afternoon at the O'Connor Tennis Center to advance to the GSC Semifinals.  
 
"I was very proud of the effort that the women came out with today. We were aggressive for the whole match and tomorrow will be another tough test for us," head tennis coach Jeff Beaman said. 
 
The Tigers improve to 17-4 overall on the season and the Choctaws finish the season with a 12-7 record. 
 
UWA started off strong by clinching the doubles point. Almudena Sanz and Irawan "Ming" Deewajee won 6-1 and then Katia de la Garza and Haina Franco won 6-4 to clinch the point. 
 
In singles, Sanz won against Ely Alas 6-0, 6-1 at Number one singles. The Tigers took courts five and six to win the match. 
 
UWA will play the winner of Valdosta State and Montevallo on Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Lagoon Park in Montgomery, Alabama.
