Women's Tennis Wins GSC Tournament Championship Over AUM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The 14th ranked West Alabama women's tennis team won their second straight Gulf South Conference Tournament Championship by defeating 18th ranked Auburn-Montgomery 4-1 at Lagoon Park on Saturday afternoon. 
 
"Our women have fought hard all year and I am proud of the results we have earned this season. AUM pushed us at every court, and it will prepare us for regionals next week," head tennis coach Jeff Beaman said. 

UWA is now 19-4 overall and the Warhawks drop to 17-7. 
 
The Tigers lost the first doubles match at court one and then were able to bounce back and win at courts two and three to earn the first point of the match. 
 
In singles play, AUM struck first winning at court one when Almudena Sanz lost 6-3, 6-1 to Sofia Navarro. 
 
Heden Ly earned the second point for UWA with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Ane Ibarra and then Valeria Arevalo won at court six 6-4, 6-1 against Alba De La Torre for the third point. 
 
Haina Franco won her first set 6-2 and then lost the second set 2-6. Franco shut out her opponent Nahia Izco 6-0 in the third set to clinch the title for the Tigers. 
 
With the win it is the second time in school history that UWA has won both the GSC Regular Season Championship and the GSC Tournament Championship in women's tennis.  
 
The Tigers will learn where they play in the NCAA tournament when the committee releases the south region bracket on Tuesday.
