Tigers Shut Out Lynn to Advance to South Region One Championship

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The No. 4 seed West Alabama women's tennis took care of business against No. 5 seed Lynn 4-0 in the first round of the NCAA South Regional One Tournament Friday morning at the Buccaneer Tennis Center. 
 
The No. 14th ranked Tigers improve to 20-4 on the season and get the program's first ever win in the NCAA Division II Tournament. The No. 5 ranked Fighting Knights finish the season with a 14-7 record. 
 
"Our women competed great today putting up a great fight to win doubles and then coming out very strong in singles", head tennis coach Jeff Beaman said. "With the effort and attitude that we are carrying, I am looking forward to tomorrow." 
 
The Tigers started the day in doubles when Ming Deewajee and Almudena Sanz won at court two 6-2. The Tigers dropped court three. The 11th ranked doubles team of Katia de la Garza and Haina Franco won a battle against the sixth ranked doubles team of Karyna Bihel and Jacqueline Wagner 7-6 (7-4) to clinch the doubles point for UWA. 
 
Singles play began and Deewajee dominated her opponent Bihel to win 6-1, 6-1 at court four. Franco came out on top against Zofia Podbiol 6-3, 6-3 for the third point. Valeria Arevalo defeated Eliska Petrackova 7-5, 6-0 to clinch the fourth point and the victory for the Tigers. 
 
With the win, UWA will play in the NCAA South Regional One Championship against the No. 1 seed and Barry on Saturday at the Buccaneer Tennis Center at 10 a.m. on Barry's campus. The two teams met earlier in the season and Barry won 4-0. 

The No. 1 ranked Buccaneers brings in a 57 game win streak and has won the last four national championships. The Tigers have won 14 straight matches against Division II opponents.
