Matlock Hits Walk-Off Home Run, Tigers Split DH with Montevallo

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama softball team split the Gulf South Conference doubleheader with Montevallo Saturday evening at UWA Softball Complex. In game one, the Tigers fell 8-3 but came back and rallied in game two for an 11-10 victory over the Falcons. With the split, Montevallo won the series. 
 
The Tigers are now 18-18 overall and 10-11 in GSC play. The Falcons dropped to 22-14 overall and are now 12-7 in the conference. 
 
Game One
West Alabama softball team fell 8-3 in a battle with Montevallo during the first game of the doubleheader. 
 
Kacy Noland led the Tigers from the plate, going 2-for-2 with one home run. She had two RBIs and scored one run. 
 
The Tigers combined for a total of 10 hits. Along with Noland's two hits, Nicole Buccieri and Kelsie Gilliam had two. Cassie Matlock, Taylor Clegg, Rylie Grantz, and Kendall Johnson collected one hit. 
 
In the first inning, Noland singled through the left side, scoring Matlock to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. 
 
Over the fourth and fifth inning, the Falcons pushed a total of three runs across the plate. The Falcons' third baseman Sierra Easterwood hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning, giving the Falcons a 3-1 advantage over the Tigers. 
 
Noland hit her second home run of the series and fifth home run of the year in the fifth inning to trim the Falcons' lead to 3-2. 
 
Montevallo had four hits and pushed five runs across the plate in the seventh inning. The Falcons' first baseman Taylor Robinson hit a grand slam, and Alisha Lanyon drilled a home run to left field to gain the 8-2 advantage over the Tigers. 
 
Kelsie Gilliam doubled in the bottom of the seventh, bringing Mary Grace Sheffield home. Sheffield pinch ran for Buccieri. Sheffield's run trimmed the Falcons' lead, but Montevallo closed out the game and claimed the 8-3 win over the Tigers.
 
Noland pitched a complete game. She scattered 12 hits, gave up eight earned runs, struck out three, and walked two. 
 
Montevallo's pitcher Kaylee Hawkins claimed the win for the Falcons. She gave up one earned run and struck out seven.

Game Two
Matlock hit a walk-off home run in the eighth inning to claim the 11-10 victory over Montevallo in game two of the doubleheader. 
 
Matlock led UWA hitters. The senior outfielder went 4-for-5 from the plate with a double and a home run. She had three RBIs and scored three runs. 
 
The Tigers started things off in the second inning when Lexy House singled to left field, then made her way around the bases to score on a throwing error by the Falcons infield. Clegg also scored, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead. 
 
West Alabama pushed three runs across the plate in the third inning. Matlock scored off an error by Montevallo's catcher. Buccieri then hit a two-run homer, bringing Noland home to give the Tigers a 5-0 advantage. 
 
Montevallo had two hits and scored four runs in the fourth inning to trim the Tigers' lead to 5-4. 
 
Trammell responded by starting things off with a home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend the lead to 6-4. This was Trammell's first homer of the series, seventh of the season.
 
Montevallo pushed a total of six runs across the plate over the fifth and sixth inning, allowing the Falcons to take the 10-6 lead. 
 
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Tigers had three hits and scored three runs. Matlock doubled, scoring House and Johnson. Gilliam then grounded out to third base, allowing Matlock to score, cutting the Falcons' lead to 10-9.
 
The Tigers tied the game at 10-10 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Hannah Mynard hit her sixth home run of the season. 
 
In the eighth inning, Matlock hit a walk-off home run to end the game and claim the 11-10 victory over Montevallo. This was Matlock's first home run of the season.
 
Noland (3-5) claimed the win for the Tigers. She gave up no earned runs over two innings of work. 
 
Montevallo's pitcher Taylor Robinson absorbed the loss for the Falcons. She gave up one earned run over one inning of work.

The Tigers return to the diamond on April 15 to face the Bulldogs of Union in a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at Fesmire Softball Field in Jackson, Tenn.
