Tiger Softball Sweeps Miles College

PLEASANT GROVE, Ala. - West Alabama softball team swept Miles College in the doubleheader matchup Wednesday evening. The Tigers destroyed the Golden Bears 16-3 in game one of the doubleheader and shutout Miles 14-0 in game two. 
 
The Tigers improved to 20-18 overall, while the Golden Bears dropped to 8-20-1.  
 
Game One
In game one of the doubleheader, the Tigers rallied in the seventh inning and pushed eight runs across the plate to claim the 16-3 victory over Miles College.
 
The Tigers pounded out 15 hits compared to the Golden Bears' four. Cassie Matlock collected three hits. Kelsie Gilliam, Taylor Clegg, and Grace Self had a pair of hits. Kacy Noland, Hannah Mynard, and Clegg added doubles. 
 
Self hit a home run in the sixth inning and delivered another three-run homer in the seventh, her second longball of the day. Rylie Grantz hit her fourth home run of the season in the sixth inning. Emily Cowart added another home in the seventh.
 
UWA held the lead at 8-3, heading into the seventh inning. The Tigers rallied with six hits and pushed eight runs across the plate in the seventh to close out the game and claim the 16-3 win over Miles College.
 
Miles' pitcher Zamiyah Williams was tagged with the loss as she went 5.1 innings giving up nine hits, six earned runs, and walking four.
 
Kaeleigh Crutchfield claimed the win. She scattered four hits, gave up three earned runs, walked four, and struck out three over seven innings of work.

Game Two
The Tigers blanked Miles College 14-0 in game two of the doubleheader.
 
UWA pounded out 16 hits, eight of them being in the seventh inning. Matlock and Mynard collected three hits. Gilliam, Noland, Clegg, and Grantz each had two. Riley Sullivan and Lexy House added a hit. 
 
Noland, Clegg, Mynard, and Grantz each had a double. Matlock added a triple while Grantz recorded a three-run homer in the seventh inning. 
 
The Tigers stayed ahead the whole game and were leading 6-0, heading into the top of the seventh inning. UWA exploded eight hits and added eight runs to close out the game with a 14-0 shutout over Miles College. 
 
Noland claimed the win for the Tigers. The senior pitcher scattered two hits, did not give up any earned runs, and struck out 16 over seven innings of work. 
 
Miles senior pitcher Shakayla Terry absorbed the loss for the Golden Bears. She gave up seven earned runs and walked five over 6.1 innings.

The Tigers return to the diamond Friday to face Union with a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at Fesmire Softball Field in Jackson, Tenn.
