Cassie Matlock Named First Team All-GSC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - West Alabama outfielder Cassie Matlock has been named First Team All-Gulf South Conference selected by the league's coaches. 

Matlock leads the Tigers with a .406 batting average and has stayed in the league's top 10 for hitting. The senior outfielder ended the regular season with 63 hits on 155 at-bats with 11 doubles, five triples, and two home runs. Matlock has collected 32 RBIs and scored 42 runs. She has stolen 29 bases on her 34 attempts. The Edmonton, Alberta, Canada native has a fielding percentage of .944. 

Matlock is ranked first in the conference for triples, second in stolen bases, fourth in runs scored, and fifth in hits.

During her time as a Tiger, Matlock has played in 102 games and started in 92 of them. She had tallied 118 hits over three seasons at UWA, one being a shortened season due to COVID-19. The senior outfielder has a career fielding percentage of .956. 

Matlock also led UWA hitters during the 2021 season and ended the regular season with a .374 batting average. During Matlock's time at UWA, she has been named to the 2021 All-GSC Second Team and named to the GSC Spring Academic Honor Roll. 

Teala Howard from West Florida was voted Player of the Year, Samantha Richards from Valdosta State was voted Pitcher of the Year, Javaria Smith from Lee was named Freshman of the Year, and head coach Eric Newell from Auburn Montgomery claimed Coach of the Year.
