Men's Soccer Opens the 2022 Regular Season at Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The West Alabama men's soccer team returns to the pitch on Thursday to open the 2022 regular season. The Tigers will take on Carson-Newman at 3 p.m. in Jefferson City, Tennessee at McCown Field.

"After a solid preseason we are all absolutely buzzing to get our regular season under way," head coach Ross Nelson said. "The lads showed some promising stuff in preseason but now it is crunch time. This is where it really matters and we are ready for whatever test is thrown at us."

West Alabama finished the 2021 season with a 7-10 record while the Eagles are coming off an 11-4-1 record. Both teams were eliminated in the quarterfinals of their respected conferences.

The Tigers return seniors Peter Oyetunji and Richard Lopez. The duo played in all 17 games during the 2021 campaign and combined for five goals and four assists.

Harry Deveney is back as the goalkeeper after recording 29 saves last season. The graduate student from Liverpool, England, played in 11 games tallying 1,042 minutes played.

UWA was selected to finish in ninth place in the GSC Preseason Poll. Patrick Sacher, Shane Pettit, and Ellis Williamson were selected to the Gulf South Conference Newcomer Watch List.

The Eagles were selected to finish in first place in the South Atlantic Conference Preseason Poll. Eric Schmutzer and Nik Carsh were selected to the Preseason All-SAC Team. Carsh and Schmutzer scored three goals, and Carsh had four assists.
