UWA Volleyball Splits Day Two of Newberry Tournament

NEWBERRY, S.C. - West Alabama volleyball split the second day of the Newberry Tournament by dropping the first match but winning the second contest Saturday afternoon inside the Eleazer Arena. The Tigers are now 3-5 overall. 

The Tigers took Newberry College to four sets but took a 3-1 defeat (25-9, 25-17, 22-25, 25-8). UWA battled back to close out the tournament with a 3-0 win over Southern Wesleyan (25-17, 25-14, 25-16).

In the first match of the day, Newberry outhit UWA and held the edge over the Tigers in kills (40-30) and digs (64-51). The Wolves led in aces (9-4) and blocks (8-4). 

Johanna Martin led UWA attackers with eight kills, hitting .438. Ally Craig and Nathalia Medeiros posted seven kills. MacKenzie Wells and Craig were the only Tigers to post double figures in digs. Wells led the team with 20, while Craig added 11 digs. Chyna Dixon was credited with 16 assists in the match. 

NC Kate Brown posted a .500 hitting percentage and tallied 17 kills and 11 digs. Kannyn Boyd led the defense with 17 digs. 

As a unit, UWA posted a 2.50 hitting percentage with 40 kills and 15 errors on 100 total attacks in the second match of the day. Dixon led the team with 11 kills, hitting .381. Martin and Madison Fisher posted eight slams. Fisher added 11 digs. Maddie Van Dyke passed 20 assists.

Quiara Dunson led the team defensively with 16 digs. Wells added nine digs and led the team with five aces. 

SWU posted 15 kills and 41 digs. Abigail Gannaio led SWU with six kills, while Carter Duggins led the team with 10 digs. 

The Tigers return to action Friday at the AUM Tournament hosted by Auburn Montgomery. UWA takes on Tuskegee at 11:30 a.m. at AUM Athletics Complex in Montgomery, Alabama.
