West Georgia Defeats Volleyball in GSC Contest

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The University of West Alabama volleyball team was taken down by the University of West Georgia in a Gulf South Conference contest by a 3-0 score, Friday night from The Coliseum.

UWG improves to 11-6 and 5-3 in GSC action, while UWA falls to 4-16 and 1-8.

The teams went back and forth to start the contest, but with a 8-7 lead, UWG went on a 9-1 run to swell the lead to 17-8.

The Tigers won the next four rallies after kills by Amelia Johnigan and Ally Craig and a Jaida Alvin ace. From there, the Tigers trimmed the Wolves' lead down to 22-18. UWG responded with the final three points of the set to take the opener, 25-18.

West Alabama had the scoring go in their favor in the second stanza, getting out to a 10-4 lead. Trailing 15-10, West Georgia flipped the score in its favor quickly with 11 of the next 12 points going to the home team, including seven straight.

The Tigers did cut the score from 21-16 to 22-21 with five out of the next six points, but three straight rallies by the Wolves gave the home team the 2-0 lead with a 25-21 score.

Despite the setback in the second frame, UWG was held to a -.034 swing percentage with 10 kills and 11 errors on 29 swings.

In the third, the Wolves started with the lead and did not relinquish it, rolling to a 25-15 score.

Ally Craig led the Tigers with nine kills and six digs, while Cloe Bonvillain and Quiara Dunson each added six digs.

Zoe LaBreche led all attackers with 11 digs and added a double-double with 10 digs.

UWA will next head down to Valdosta State for a conference showdown on Saturday afternoon.
