Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla. - The University of West Alabama volleyball team was taken down by No. 15 University of West Florida in three sets in a Gulf South Conference (GSC) match Tuesday evening from the UWF Field House.
West Florida, who moved up one spot in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II poll earlier on Tuesday, is now 12-4 overall and 6-0 in GSC play, while West Alabama dropped to 3-13 and 1-5.
After UWF stormed to a 25-8 opening set victory thanks to 14 kills, UWA, who had four kills in the first, came through strong in the second set with 15.
The second frame went back and forth, as each team had no more than a three-point advantage at a given time. After the Tigers tied the set at 16 with a
Berfin Mertcan kil, the Argos won the next three points and five of the next seven to lead 21-18.
Trailing 23-19, West Alabama used three straight spikes from
Ally Craig,
Jaida Alvin and
Peyton Quesnel to cut the deficit to 23-22, but the Argos won the final two points thanks to a Damyah Joyner kill and a UWA attack error.
After trailing points early in the third set, UWF went on a 13-2 run that pulled them away from the visitors into winning the match by a 25-9 score.
Jaida Alvin led the Tigers with eight kills, while
Berfin Mertcan posted 18 assists, seven digs and two aces.
Damyah Joyner and Jenna Zydio each had 10 kills for UWF, while Meg Brackhan added 17 digs.
The Tigers will return home for a three-match homestand this weekend, beginning with Shorter on Friday at 6 p.m. from Pruitt Hall.
