LLIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama women's basketball team dropped a Gulf South Conference (GSC) game to the University of Montevallo 70-56, Monday evening inside Pruitt Hall.
West Alabama opened GSC play on this November night and fell to 1-4 overall. Montevallo improves to 4-1 and 2-0 in conference action.
Trailing by nine early in the ball game, the Tigers cut the deficit down to a field goal, 14-12, after a
Kamille Clark jump shot with three minutes remaining in the period.
Late in the quarter,
Kendall Lacoste picked up a quick steal and two points on the other end to make it a 16-14 score in favor of Montevallo, but a quarter-ending triple by Cali Smallwood made it a 19-14 lead after 10 minutes.
The second quarter saw the Falcons increase the lead to seven after back-to-back field goals, but the Tigers made it interesting midway through. That seven-point deficit was erased quickly by an 8-0 run. With under six minutes left in the half,
Sydney Schwallie's triple gave the Tigers the 25-24 lead.
UM made it a 30-27 advantage on a three-pointer, but back-to-back field goals by Clark and Lacoste gave the home team the lead briefly, 32-30, before Marisa Snodgrass tied it up on the last possession of the half.
The Falcons essentially put the game away in the third quarter, outscoring the Tigers, 20-6, limiting them to just two field goals for the period. Meanwhile, the visitors dropped 6-of-14 from the floor in the stanza.
Kamile Clark nearly missed a double-double with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting and added eight rebounds. The Memphis, Tenn. native set new UWA bests in points and boards on Monday night.
Kendall Lacoste picked up where she left off prior to the Thanksgiving break with four triples, matching a season-high, and set a new best with 19 points.
Shayla Golden grabbed 11 rebounds, while Maryanne Logdson dished out five assists.
UM was led by 16 points and seven rebounds by Cali Smallwood, while Anna Katherine Eastman scored 14 points, grabbed seven rebounds and added five dimes.
UWA will wrap up the season-opening home stand on Thursday against Auburn Montgomery, Tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside Pruitt Hall.
