Women's Basketball Stifled by Lee on the Road

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The University of West Alabama women's basketball team suffered a 60-34 decision to Lee University in a Gulf South Conference contest, Sunday afternoon from Paul Dana Walker Arena.

After dropping its first two games of the season, Lee has won the last six contests and is now 6-2 on the year and a perfect 5-0 in conference play. West Alabama falls to 2-7 and 1-4.

"We knew that they were going to play 12 to 14 people deep, and there's no let down. Our problem was that we just could not score. Give a lot a credit to Lee's defense. We found a hot hand or two in the second half, but we just could not find our offense today," said head coach Rusty Cram.

The Flames led from the start, scoring the first nine points of the game before the Tigers got on the board with a Maryanne Logsdon triple.

Shayla Golden made it a four-point game, 9-5, with a second chance layup, but the Flames shut down any offense the Tigers drew up, finishing the quarter on an 11-0 run.

The Flames kept the offense going from there, pushing the lead to 37-15 at the break.

Lee kept the bank closed for UWA on Sunday, holding the visitors to just 9-of-43 in the first three quarters of the game.

UWA showed great tenacity in the fourth quarter, giving opportunities to those who have seen limited time. The Tigers started the period with field goals by Kaedre Denson and Jordan Parker. Kiona McCallister also contriubted a bucket midway through.

The Tigers did get to see some players who played extended minutes on Sunday. Janiya Adams played in her first collegiate game, recording a field goal and rebound in eight minutes, while Kiona McCallister grabbed five boards in 18 minutes off the bench.

"Kiona had her best game of the year, and it was good to see Janiya's quick hands, but she has a lot to learn in her first year of college basketball," added Cram.

Kaedre Denson led the Tigers with nine points and four boards, while Maryanne Logsdon and Jordan Parker each contributed seven points.

Mallory Hampton, one of the top scorers in the GSC, led all scorers on this Sunday with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting.

UWA will wrap up the calendar year at home with a quick two-game home stand. The Tigers will host Mississippi College from Pruitt Hall on Friday evening at 5:30 p.m.
